چکیده

22 Evoked potentials (EPs) are observed in motor cortical local field potentials (LFPs) during 23 movement execution (Movement Related Potentials, MRPs) and in response to relevant 24 visual cues (Visual Evoked Potentials, VEPs). Motor cortical EPs may be directionally 25 selective, but little is known concerning their relation to other aspects of motor behavior, such 26 as task timing and performance. We recorded LFPs in motor cortex of two monkeys during 27 performance of a pre-cued arm-reaching task. A time-cue at the start of each trial signaled 28 delay duration, and thereby the pace of the task and the available time for movement 29 preparation. VEPs and MRPs were strongly modulated by the delay duration; VEPs being 30 systematically larger in short delay trials and MRPs larger in long delay trials. Despite these 31 systematic modulations related to the task timing, directional selectivity was similar in short 32 and long trials. The behavioral reaction time (RT) was positively correlated with MRP size 33 and negatively correlated with VEP size, within sessions. In addition, the behavioral 34 performance improved across sessions, in parallel with a slow decrease in the size of VEPs 35 and MRPs. Our results clearly show the strong influence of the behavioral context and 36 performance upon motor cortical population activity during movement preparation and 37 execution.

Evoked potentials in motor cortical local field potentials reflect task timing and behavioral performance.

Evoked potentials (EPs) are observed in motor cortical local field potentials (LFPs) during movement execution (movement-related potentials [MRPs]) and in response to relevant visual cues (visual evoked potentials [VEPs]). Motor cortical EPs may be directionally selective, but little is known concerning their relation to other aspects of motor behavior, such as task timing and performance. We r...

Early visuomotor representations revealed from evoked local field potentials in motor and premotor cortical areas.

Local field potentials (LFPs) recorded from primary motor cortex (MI) have been shown to be tuned to the direction of visually guided reaching movements, but MI LFPs have not been shown to be tuned to the direction of an upcoming movement during the delay period that precedes movement in an instructed-delay reaching task. Also, LFPs in dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) have not been investigated in ...

Population interactions between parietal and primary motor cortices during reach.

Neural interactions between parietal area 2/5 and primary motor cortex (M1) were examined to determine the timing and behavioral correlates of cortico-cortical interactions. Neural activity in areas 2/5 and M1 was simultaneously recorded with 96-channel microelectrode arrays in three rhesus monkeys performing a center-out reach task. We introduce a new method to reveal parietal-motor interactio...

Hemispheric differences in the relationship between corticomotor excitability changes following a fine-motor task and motor learning.

Motor performance induces a postexercise increase in corticomotor excitability that may be associated with motor learning. We investigated whether there are hemispheric differences in the extent and/or time course of changes in corticomotor excitability following a manipulation task (Purdue pegboard) and their relationship with motor performance. Single- and paired-pulse (3 ms) transcranial mag...

Neural discharge and local field potential oscillations in primate motor cortex during voluntary movements.

The role of "fast," or gamma band (20-80 Hz), local field potential (LFP) oscillations in representing neuronal activity and in encoding motor behavior was examined in motor cortex of two alert monkeys. Using chronically implanted microwires, we simultaneously recorded LFPs and single or multiple unit (MU) discharge at a group of sites in the precentral gyrus during trained finger force or reac...
